Sembakkam Lake, also known as Hastinapuram Lake, is nestled within the Pallikaranai watershed basin in the vibrant Chennai Metropolitan Area. Despite challenges posed by untreated or semi-treated sewage channels, the Sembakkam Lake remains a cherished natural asset, standing as one of the few surviving lakes within the city. It attracts diverse flora and fauna and remains a permanent stop for migratory birds. The lake faces many environmental challenges and needs a sustainable vision for rejuvenation and lakefront development
Our mission is to develop this lake into a neighborhood lake which is accessible by all and to preserve its diverse ecological habitat. Firstly, we aim to create vibrant and secure public spaces surrounding the lake, fostering a sense of community and providing a tranquil retreat for residents. Secondly, we are committed to enhancing the lake's water holding capacity and addressing the issue of sewage ingress. The strategies of placemaking are derived after a rigorous analysis of the site with an approach of water management as its core idea.
